The President-Elect's Message

Kamran Vaziri

We had many good suggestions for the Morgan Lecturer candidate. Out of the top three, the Board of Directors of the Accelerator Section selected A. H. Sullivan. In early February, we submitted the package for the nomination of Tony Sullivan as the Morgan Lecturer to the Health Physics Society (HPS) Awards Committee. According to the chair of the Awards Committee, Ruth McBurney, the nomination packages were sent to the committee on March 23. We should hear from them soon.

We had a very good response to the call for abstracts for the 2007 annual HPS meeting in Portland, Oregon. If our Morgan Lecturer is approved by the Awards Committee, the accelerator technical session will be a busy day. At least 10 papers will be presented. We have sent the request for scheduling of the accelerator technical session and a tentative schedule of the talks to Chris Martel, chair of the HPS Program Committee. Thanks to all for your contributions.

As I mentioned last time, the Northern California Chapter and the Accelerator Section are working very hard on the preparation of the 2008 midyear and the professional development school (PDS). Many person-hours have been spent just to get the worldwide mailing addresses for the accelerator facilities, major hospitals, related companies, and homeland security institutions. For example, some 300 hospitals in the US and other countries will receive our poster. The announcement of the 2008 midyear and where to request a poster was sent to about 200 homeland security addresses. The call for abstracts for the midyear went out in the March issue of the HPS newsletter, Health Physics News. As you are aware, both the midyear website and PDS website are up. The websites contain a lot of information about Oakland, and the PDS site has the school syllabus--take a look.
