The President-Elect's Message

Kamran Vaziri

We're all looking forward to this summer's 2007 annual Health Physics Society (HPS) meeting in Portland, Oregon. The Accelerator Section's technical session will be on Wednesday morning, July 10. The HPS Awards Committee approved our Morgan Lecturer nominee, Dr. Anthony H. Sullivan. The title of his talk will be "Radiation Safety around High-Energy Particle Accelerators (as seen with the benefit of hindsight)." Due to health reasons, Dr. Sullivan will not be able to travel to the meeting. Dr. Ralph Thomas has kindly agreed to present Dr. Sullivan's talk. We will have a packed morning with ten more talks. The section's business meeting will follow at noon. I hope to see you all there.

We will be reviewing student talks and posters in search of a good candidate for our Wade Patterson award. We will ask for the assistance of two of the attending Accelerator Section members to act as referees.

We are planning to hold the Accelerator Section Board of Directors' meeting on Sunday night after the reception. Currently we are working on reserving a room. Please let me know if you have any issues that you would like the board to discuss.

The preparations for the 2008 midyear and the professional development school (PDS) are coming along very well, thanks to a large amount of work by Scott Walker; Linnea Wahl, Don Cossairt, and Vaclav Vylet (PDS deans); the Northern California Chapter; and Lorraine Day. We are busy getting speakers and chairpersons for different sessions. There are many interesting topics that will be taught and discussed. Don't forget to request a poster for your institution if you have not received the midyear poster yet.
