FROM THE OFFICERS The President's
Message For us in the
Accelerator Section and the Northern California Chapter of the Health Physics
Society (HPS), the old Chinese proverb "may you live in interesting
times" has come true. There has been a tremendous amount of work going
on for both the 2008 midyear meeting and the professional development school
(PDS). I am sure the frenzy of activity will continue into February 2008. As
you know the scope of this midyear went beyond accelerators and covers
homeland security, medical, and industrial radiation-generating machines. If
you get a chance, look at the submitted
abstracts on the midyear website; there are many interesting talks on
these topics. Note the deadline for uploading your
presentation has been extended to January 10. The Editor's
Message It's not too late!
There's still time to register for the 2008 Health Physics Society (HPS) Midyear Topical Meeting on
"Radiation-Generating Devices." And you can also still register for
the 2008 |

interest OFFICERS FROM
THE CORRESPONDENTS News from Fermi
National Accelerator Lab The scheduled shutdown
of the Fermi National Accelerator Lab's
(Fermilab's) accelerator complex is over and the collective dose added up to
11.2 person-rems. In preparation for this shutdown, the Accelerator Division
(AD) head highlighted the importance of keeping doses as low as reasonably
achievable (ALARA) at all meetings and briefings related to shutdown work. Status Update
for Implementation of NRC Regulatory Authority for Certain Naturally
Occurring and Accelerator-Produced Radioactive Material The U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has published its
final rule expanding the definition of byproduct material subject to its
regulatory authority, implementing certain provisions of the Energy Policy
Act (EPAct) of 2005. The final regulation establishing requirements for
licensing and regulating Section 11e.(3) and 11e.(4) byproduct material, as
required by Section 651(e) of the EPAct, was published on October 1, 2007
(Volume 72, pages 55863-55937, of the Federal
Register (72 FR 55863)). It adds certain naturally occurring and
accelerator-produced radioactive material (NARM) to the definition of
“byproduct material” in the NRC’s regulations. These final
regulations became effective on November 30, 2007. The final regulations can
be accessed from the NRC’s Public Involvement Rulemaking web
site. |

accomplished collection of individuals gather in our Convention Center, and
for that I send a special word of thanks to the Northern California Chapter
of the Health Physics Society. I will also take this opportunity to express
my sincere appreciation for the incredible work NCCHPS has done to provide
educational opportunities for future generations of aspiring scientists and
those who seek vocations in the medical field. I wish you all continued success in your research and support
your efforts to cultivate innovative collaboration through education and
scholarship.” Respectfully, Ronald V. Dellums, Mayor of Does Your Bookshelf Have
