The Scholarship Selection Committee and the deans of the 2008 Health Physics Society Professional Development School are pleased to announce that Kimberly A. Burns, a graduate student at Georgia Tech, has been chosen to receive a $1200 scholarship to attend the school in January 2008 in Oakland, California. The committee members (Dr. Ken Kase, Dr. Genevieve Roessler, and Dr. Ralph Thomas) made their decision based not only on Ms. Burns excellent academic achievements, but also on her thoughtful description of her personal goals. With several excellent candidates to choose from, the committee’s decision was not an easy one.
Ms. Burns is a student of Dr. Nolan Hertel, Professor of Nuclear and Radiological Engineering at Georgia Tech. Ms. Burns has conducted research in many areas of health physics but most notably in shielding materials and efficiencies. After completing her doctorate, she plans to continue her shielding research and later pursue a career in academia.
By attending the 2008 Professional Development School, “Topics in Accelerator Health Physics,” we hope that Ms. Burns will gain valuable insight into the challenges and rewards of a career in accelerator health physics. Please join us in Oakland, where Dr. Thomas will officially honor Ms. Burns with her scholarship check at our special night-out celebration on Friday, February 1. For more information about the school (including registration form), please see the school website.
Many thanks are due to Dr. Thomas for donating the books that formed the basis for the scholarship, to all the generous buyers of those books, to the Scholarship Selection Committee, and to Melissa Mannion for coordinating the scholarship process. Your efforts were well worthwhile, as Ms. Burns can attest.
