Abstract

EDAPTS is a communication package widely used in the Nuclear power plants monitoring radiation workers. Due to the current threat from terrorist activity the technology had to be developed for emergency response. The probability of a radiological incident or accident within the US is a reality. Imagine a truck carrying radioactive waste being involved in an accident, or a terrorist detonating a dirty bomb in New York City, the fireman, paramedics, and policemen will enter the scene without any knowledge of the risks involve. By developing a system that monitors radiological hazards, the safety and welfare of first responders and remediation workers in the field can be minimized. It is critical that first responders and on-scene commanders have the right information, at the right time to make rapid informed decisions. EDAPTS was developed to provide on-scene commanders a flexible platform to monitor personnel working in a potential radiological environment.
