Answer to Question #131 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"Category: Pregnancy and Radiation — Exposures not directly to embryo/fetus The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field: Q
I have recently discovered I am pregnant. I recently had x rays on both knees. How might this affect my baby?
A
When an x ray is taken, only the part of the body of interest (for example your knees) is exposed to the radiation because the radiation beam from the x-ray machine is collimated. In your case, the lower abdomen (containing the uterus and other organs and tissues) was not exposed to any significant radiation.
