Answer to Question #1663 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"Category: Pregnancy and Radiation — Flying The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field: Q
I am flying across country to Cancun, Mexico, in about 10 days, and I will be just a little over nine weeks pregnant. My doctor told me that as long as I am not having any major problems with my pregnancy before we leave, I should be fine to fly. I was reading about all the radiation, and then the fact of the solar storms that could occur during the flight, and I was wondering if you could give me a few tips as to what to do?
A
I understand your concern about radiation exposure during pregnancy. Unfortunately, the news media greatly exaggerates the risks. Have a good time in Cancun and don't forget to limit your use of alcohol and of course you don't smoke. Correct? Your trip to Cancun and back will not increase your risk of injuring your baby from the exposure to radiation.
