Answer to Question #192 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"Category: Environmental and Background Radiation — General The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field: Q
Is it safe to use a Class II safety cabinet to handle radioactive powders?
A
To handle low-level radioactive airborne contaminants such as 3H or 14C, a fume hood (with filtration) or a glove box is typically used. Since 30 percent of the air is exhausted unfiltered to the outside for the Class II cabinet, some radioactive materials (albeit low levels) could be released. To ensure containment of airborne contaminants, enclosed or completely filtered systems such as a glove box or fume hood should be used. Most science apparatus catalogs have such devices.
