Answer to Question #268 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Instrumentation and Measurements

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
What dose levels should I expect to be able to detect on a trip to the Grand Canyon, Zion Canyon, and Death Valley? I am planning on taking an instrument that's lowest unit of detection is 0.02 mR/hr and am concerned that it won't be sensitive enough for at-surface readings.
A
An instrument that can only detect 0.02 mR/h will not be of much use unless you just happen to pass close to a geologic anomaly; for example, a vein of uranium. General exposures in those areas typically range from 0.008 to 0.015 mR/h. Carry the instrument anyway; surprises do show up and it is a good conversation piece. Michael Murray
