Answer to Question #2686 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"Category: Pregnancy and Radiation — Exposures not directly to embryo/fetus The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field: Q
I had full-mouth dental x rays (~20 views) last month; they shielded my groin area. This month my wife and I would like to try to have a baby. Could the radiation exposure of the dental x rays harm my sperm and cause birth defects?
A
Dental x rays will not affect the sperm since there is no radiation dose to the gonads. Like most x-ray exams, the x-ray beam is focused on the item of interest, in this case your teeth. Likewise, dental x rays will not affect your wife's ability to become pregnant or the pregnancy itself. Good luck!
