Answer to Question #2948 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Pregnancy and Radiation — Proximity to radioactive persons

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

I am currently three months pregnant and my mother-in-law is going to start a six-week course of radiation soon. She has been diagnosed with throat cancer. It will be for five days a week and I will be driving her there daily. Will there be any risk at all to my unborn child? Thank you for your time in answering my question.

A

Your mother will be receiving radiation therapy from external sources. She will not be radioactive and you will not be exposed to any radiation as a result of her therapy. Your risks for birth defects and miscarriage are not altered by driving your mother-in-law to therapy.
