Answer to Question #30 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Pregnancy and Radiation

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

I had a birthmark on my ankle removed with the yag laser and did not know yet that I was pregnant. I am very scared of the damage done to the fetus and I am wondering if you can give me any information on the risks and complications?

A
There is no concern for your fetus due to the laser treatment that you had on your ankle. The treatment site is far distant from your abdominal area. In addition, laser radiation is just a strong light. It does not penetrate deeper than the surface of your skin. Even if the treatment had been in the abdominal area, it would not have caused an effect on the fetus.
