Answer to Question #3018 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Policy, Guidelines, and Regulations — Radiation Safety Issues

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
What is the current radiochemical use and disposal legislation under which US pharmaceutical companies work? I'm thinking specifically of the laws governing the transport of very small quantities of radioactivity from the United Kingdom to the United States as part of a collaborative research project. In the United Kingdom we work "The Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999" and "The Radioactive Material (Road Transport) Regulations 2002." Can you point me towards an Internet-based copy of the relevant US documents?
A

In the US, for very small or "exempt" sources, the regulations in Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Parts 30 and 32 apply. You can look up the regulations at the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission's website and you can also review a guidance document issued by this agency called NUREG-1556, Vol. 8, " Program-Specific Guidance about Exempt Distribution Licensees." Both the regulations 10 CFR Part 30-32 and the NUREG can be found on NRC's website.

In addition, your US counterparts can assist you by contacting their state Radiation Control Program director for additional information.
