Answer to Question #3555 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"Category: Microwaves, Radar, and Radiofrequency — Satellite Dishes The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field: Q
We have a satellite dish (18") for receiving TV mounted on the side of our home. It is directly outside a room we plan to use as a nursery. I understand from previous postings on your ATE that these dishes receive rather than transmit signals. Is there any measurable exposure from dishes that only receive signals? Are there any known health issues and/or risks from such a dish? Would it be preferable to relocate the dish?
A
Satellite dishes for receiving TV have no emissions and pose no radiation hazard in the surrounding area. There is no need to move this antenna because of any type of occupancy inside the house. The satellite signals that are being received are extremely weak and are everywhere in our environment—that is why you can put the receiving dish almost anywhere you please to receive the signals. It is the marvel of modern technology that such weak radiofrequency signals can carry sufficient information to make possible such uses as radio, TV, cell phones, police and fire radios, etc., yet pose no health hazards.
