Answer to Question #3600 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"Category: Radiation Effects — Effects on Tissues and Organs The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field: Q
I am going in for radioactive treatment on my thyroid soon and I was wondering about hair loss. Is it possible that I could go bald? I am almost in my 50s and I still have a full head of long hair and I don't want to lose it.
A
The radiation dose from radioiodine therapy of thyroid disease is strongly localized to the thyroid gland. In general, the dose to the scalp is well below the threshold for epilation. If you remain concerned, you should ask the physician who administers your treatment. S. Julian Gibbs, DDS, PhD
