Answer to Question #3624 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Pregnancy and Radiation — Exposures not directly to embryo/fetus

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

I found out about four months ago that I was pregnant and I need an x ray on my ankle. Will the radiation affect the baby?

A

X rays of your ankle or foot, performed with modern technology, will deliver a negligible dose of radiation to your unborn baby. The dose will be too small to measure. It will be substantially less than the dose you (and every person) receive each day from natural environmental radiation.

Conclusion:  There is no reason for concern regarding x rays of your ankle.
