Answer to Question #3634 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Radiation Effects — Medical and Dental Radiation

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

I recently had a dental x ray. The machine circled my head 180 degrees. I had my mobile phone bag with me (nearby) and a switched-on phone. Could there be any radiation complications? I am beside myself with worry.

A

Mobile telephones emit RF, which is a technical name for radio waves. There are no known interactions with x rays. There are further no known biological effects from RF, except in high doses which may heat tissue (like microwave).

Conclusion: You have no reason for concern regarding having your cell phone nearby during x-ray exposure.
