Category: Pregnancy and Radiation — Tanning

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

I want to know if the "mystic tan" self-tanning booth is safe for pregnant women. I don't want to get a natural tan because of the risk of sun exposure, but want to look bronzed this summer.

A
It's great you're thinking about the risks of sun exposure! The Mystic Tan™ system does not expose you to any form of radiation so, from that aspect, it is safe. As I understand it, the system actually sprays a bronzing liquid on you. It is a sunless tanning solution similar to the sunless lotion sold in stores. If there are any safety concerns related to the solution, I would expect the salon to require you to read and sign a release. If they do have one, I would advise you to read it carefully to see if it has any statements related to this procedure while pregnant.
