Category: Instrumentation and Measurements — Surveys and Measurements (SM)

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

I am looking for a low-priced preamplifier and low-priced multichannel analyzer to test room temperature radiation detectors, for example, lead iodide, using a low-energy gamma source.

A

You should contact the several Health Physics Societ Affiliates Members who manufacture preamplifiers and multichannel analyzers (MCA). A listing of these Affiliates, organized by equipment and service categories, can be found on the HPS website.

Depending on your needs, you may find just the preamplifier and MCA board that interface with a computer and provide counts in a given channel, leaving it to you to perform the peak analysis and radionuclide identification. If you need the software and library for radionuclide identification, then you should expect an equipment purchase near from $7,000 to $10,000.
