Answer to Question #45 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Pregnancy and Radiation — Guidance and policy

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
Does the HPS have a model procedure or policy for screening women of childbearing age for pregnancy prior to diagnostic radiographic examinations?
A
To my knowledge neither the HPS nor the AAPM has a "model procedure" for pregnancy screening. The American College of Radiology (ACR) in one of its standards states: "All imaging facilities should have policies and procedures to reasonably attempt to identify pregnant patients prior to the performance of any diagnostic exams involving ionizing radiation." In 1977, the NCRP published Report No. 54, Medical Radiation Exposure of Pregnant and Potentially Pregnant Women. In that report there are some recommendations for physicians concerning ascertaining the pregnancy status, as well as other considerations.
