Answer to Question #483 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Pregnancy and Radiation — Radiation effects to embryo/fetus

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
Is there any known correlation between fetal x-ray exposure and childhood cancers?
A
There are a few studies that suggest a correlation between radiation exposure of the developing embryo/fetus and childhood cancer. It should be emphasized that a statistical correlation does not necessarily mean causality. The largest and best known study is the Oxford Survey of Childhood Cancer (OSCC). OSCC results were first published in the 1950s and suggested a 50 percent increase in cancer risk for children exposed before birth. However, in some studies (e.g., Japanese survivors) OSCC findings have not been confirmed. Accordingly, it remains unclear whether x rays CAUSE cancer in children exposed before birth. Kenneth L.
