Answer to Question #5349 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Environmental and Background Radiation — General

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

How can I find current levels of radiation for areas around the globe, particularly Europe?

A
Radiation and radioactivity levels measured in specific areas all over the world are published in a number of scientific journals including Radiation Protection Dosimetry, Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, and Health Physics. Periodically, these are compiled into comprehensive reports by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR). A recent report is the 1,300-page two-volume report to the UN General Assembly published in 2000, "Sources and Effects of Ionizing Radiation."

The various UNSCEAR reports are available in many public and university libraries and are available for purchase via the United Nations Web site.
