Answer to Question #5477 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Policy, Guidelines, and Regulations

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

Is it a violation of the privacy act, or any other rule or regulation, to post quarterly exposure reports for personnel in an employee break/lunch room if the social security numbers are not included?

A
Although government and state agencies are subject to the Privacy Act, many other companies are not. You would need to check with your human relations, personnel, or legal department of the facility where you work to see what regulations apply to your facility. As discussed in ANSI/HPS N13.6-1999, "Practice for Occupational Radiation Exposure Records Systems," consideration should be given to the sensitive nature of certain types of records that are linked to an individual and appropriate measures should be taken to protect such information.
