Answer to Question #5688 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Policy, Guidelines, and Regulations — Guidance Documents

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

I am new to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations and guidance regarding posting requirements. Although I am familiar with the Department of Energy's Radiological Control Manual and procedures, except for the posting requirements in 10 CFR Part 20, I am unable to find definitions and criteria. I specifically need this information on reactor-controlled areas, contamination areas, and radioactive-material areas. Do you know of a source that details NRC requirements on posting?

A
Your question appears to pertain to nuclear power plants rather than materials or fuel-cycle licensees. Nevertheless, the regulations at 10 CFR 20.1901-1903 are the right place to look for posting requirements.

In addition, NRC Regulatory Guide 8.38, "Control of Access to High and Very High Radiation Areas in Nuclear Power Plants," also gives some additional information for guidance in this area. For materials posting questions, I would direct you to the NRC website to look over the guidance for various types of licensees (NUREG 1556 series). In addition, there were many Q&As for health physics-related questions such as yours in the Health Physics Positions Database. If you have additional questions in this area, I suggest you contact the NRC individuals listed in this database website (reactor or nonreactor related) to ask a specific question.
