Answer to Question #5971 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Radiation Workers

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

An acquaintance was treated for squamous cell carcinoma on the left base of the tongue using radiation treatments two years ago and there had been no recurrence of the disease. He works at a nuclear power plant and is concerned that periodic exposure to and inhalation of low-level airborne radioactive particles could cause irritation of his oral mucosal lining and aggravate the area involved in the radiation treatment. He is considering changing jobs due to his concern. Should he be concerned?

A

I asked one of our radiation oncologists whether or not the area that was treated with radiation would be more sensitive to radiation now. Here is his response:

"I'm not aware of any data suggesting increased sensitivity of an area to additional radiation in the years following radiation therapy. My feeling is there should be less concern about this exposure given that it is likely insignificant compared to what was received for therapy."

But we also know that feelings of concern and stress about something are personal. If your friend has strong concerns and this would always be a worry for him if he continued working in this environment, perhaps it's better for his overall health to consider a change.
