Answer to Question #780 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Radon

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
What effect does radon in your house have on a pregnancy?
A
The most recent information on the health effects of exposure to radon was published in 1999 by the Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation Committee of the National Academy of Sciences. This report is commonly known as the BEIR VI report and can be found at the Health Effects of Exposure to Radon Web page. This report provides a comprehensive discussion of the biological effects of radon and its decay products. The Committee concluded that the only significant health risk associated with exposure to radon is lung cancer. The Committee did review evidence of other potential health effects of radon including non-lung cancers and leukemias, as well as reproductive outcomes. The committee did not conclude that radon could be linked to any adverse reproductive outcomes. Rich Allen, CHP
