Category: Pregnancy and Radiation — Power lines, magnets, computers, airport screening, cell phones

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
Would you agree that an expectant mother should take precautions with work tasks involving heavy photocopying? The laser/radiation exposure may be minute, but again, do you agree, prevention is better than cure?
A
Expectant mothers should be very careful around the office and at home at all times. The safety of the child is of paramount importance. However, work involving heavy copying does not present a hazard to the mother or the child. Copying and printing machines that contain lasers or contain fluorescent lamps are manufactured in accordance with strict safety requirements to prevent unnecessary exposure to ultraviolet or laser radiation. Machines are designed with safety mechanisms known as "interlocks" that prevent access to critical components and operation of the machines, particularly lasers, if there is any tampering or attempt to disassemble the machine. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration regulates products that contain lasers. Copying machines are typically Class 1 laser products, which are the least hazardous based on their design and the safety features built into them to prevent radiation injuries. Sean Austin, CHP
