Answer to Question #94 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Pregnancy and Radiation — Proximity to radioactive persons

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
A coworker is in her second trimester of pregnancy. My boss just had a radiation pellet inserted in his prostate for cancer treatment. Is there a risk to the fetus if he comes in close proximity to her?
A
You don't give a lot of details in your question, so my response will be slightly vague. The dose rate at some short distance (say 1 m) from the source in the prostate will depend on the identity and quantity of radioisotope implanted. In most cases, the dose rate to another person (even in close proximity) is quite small. Risk to an embryo/fetus in such situations is almost certainly very small—perhaps immeasurably so—unless the proximity is VERY close and sustained for a long period.
