Answer to Question #985 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"Category: Environmental and Background Radiation — Soil and Fallout The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field: Q
What is the expected activity of 238, 239/240 Pu in surface soils in New Mexico (Albuquerque area) and in the United States due to fallout?
A
The following summarizes information I have collected from a number of sources.
We also recommend as a reference NCRP Report No. 131 "Scientific Basis for Evaluating the Risks to Populations from Space Applications of Plutonium," which has a good discussion of 238Pu concentrations, behavior in the environment and populations, and associated risks. With regard to fallout, the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Plutonium in the Environment, 9-12 November 1999, states that the concentration of 239/240Pu in the first 30 cm of the earth's crust in the northern hemisphere is 7.1±3.1 Bq kg-1 (0.19 ± 0.08 pCi g-1) and of 238Pu is 0.17±0.09 Bq kg-1 (0.0046 ± 0.0024 pCi g-1).
